Poor marketing is often the reason many businesses fail on the web and on the streets.  There are many things companies do they don’t realize, causing their business to do poorly.  These things include targeting the wrong audience, offend the audience, and target the wrong economy.  If you have a product you cannot sell and you have been performing a lot of marketing, you might be taking the wrong approach.

Targeting the wrong audience is a common mistake made in a marketing plan.  Some companies aren’t really clear who their audience is.  You have to get to know everything about your audience.  If you have a product you think teens really will like and market it to them, you could be wrong.  Elderly people might love it and teens may think it is a joke.  Before you begin a marketing plan, have people test your product.  Surveys should be supplied and all age groups should be included.  This will give you a good idea who would be interested in your product and who wouldn’t.

Offending an audience is a common mistake people make with their business and they don’t even realize it.  Taking a global approach is the big idea today with the web.  Websites are often designed to be funny and joke around.  Humor creates interest.  However, what is funny to you might not be so funny to someone else.  For example, if you post a video you think is hilarious about someone being denied their US immigration forms through the USCIS, this could offend a lot of people.  Maybe you have a joke on your site about the US citizenship exam.  Don’t post jokes and things about other nationalities on your business site trying to be funny.  Also, don’t use symbols and hand signs in photos on your site unless you are entirely sure they are not insulting to every country out there.  A thumbs up sign might seem okay but in other countries it is rude.  This would eliminate the entire country as a possible shopper.  Use smart marketing techniques.

The approach you take to capture an audience for marketing is another big factor of success or failure.  If you are using the wrong approach, you won’t reach out to enough people.  You want to sell a product, so you must create hype.  If you are targeting an older crowd of people 50 years and older, you don’t want the website to appear as if it is made for teenagers.  Too busy of a site will hurt the eyes and be annoying to an older person or a professional.  A too boring site for a teenager will not sell them a product either.  Know your audience and take a design approach around what they like to see.

Marketing goes wrong because of many mistakes made and people don’t realize it or they realize it once it is too late.  Know your audience and how to capture their attention in a positive manner.  This will help you improve sales and be successful.
